One Year in River Chase

Today marks one year since we moved from Austin to New Braunfels. I’ve been meaning to share a few photos of our new house for some time, but life kept getting in the way. It’s been a very busy year!

Our new home in the River Chase subdivision is located deep in the neighborhood on a beautiful, flat, 1-acre corner lot. We share a fence in the back with neighbors, but all along the long side of the property, there is an empty lot. As of last Tuesday, we now own that lot too! We will keep it undeveloped as we love to watch the deer graze near the fence. Curtis, the kids, and I occupy the big house. It’s about 3600 square feet and is almost all one-story. There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. The ceilings range from 10-14 feet which gives it a palatial feel. There is a bonus room above the garage that is huge and it has its own bathroom, so we’ve made that the guest quarters, complete with queen and twin beds. The kids are on one end of the house and share a Jack and Jill bathroom. I have a nook in the hallway for my office space that is near their bedrooms and laundry room. Our master suite is enormous and takes up the entire left side of the house. It has its own foyer, patio, and even a fireplace! The kids have their own game room and we have a billiards room, which is something Curtis and I have wanted ever since we moved in together. We met playing pool and used to go out every Friday night to shoot pool for years. The main living space is comprised of the kitchen, family room, dining room, and bar. This space and the outside were the two areas where we’ve made the most changes since moving in. Our TV was too big to fit the built-in entertainment center, so we had that ripped out within the first month. The kitchen and bar had lots of honey colored wood cabinetry, and since the kitchen is totally interior, it seemed dark. I had the cabinets painted creamy white to match the baseboards and crown molding, swapped the oil-rubbed bronze hardware for stainless, changed out the faucet, and replaced the pendant lights. I LOVE the result. The entire space is golden and creamy and delicious… with a touch of bling. I’m so happy with it.

Outside the gold and brown reminded me of my high school colors in the late 80s. I spent so much time designing our new house that we were going to build in Georgetown, I pretty much knew what colors I wanted without even having to try a lot of samples. Sure enough, the very first gray I had chosen ended up being “the one”… the main house color is Dorian Gray and the trim is Natural Choice, an almost white shade, both are Sherwin Williams. I love love love love love how it turned out! I also painted accents glossy black and they really pop. Someday, I would love to have the fence painted black, but that will have to wait a while.

In 2010, the previous owners had a pool put in and a guest house. The little house belongs to my mom (we have a legal co-ownership agreement with the three of us, we all own this property together!). Her house is 1000 square feet and all one-story. It has tall ceilings too! It’s has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. It’s perfect for her. The pool is gorgeous. We had the slide removed since the kids are a little big for it, converted it to saltwater, and got it heated. Year-round fun!

Here are some before and afters… I never know if it’s better to show the before/after one after the other, or all the befores first, then the afters? I don’t know! Let’s see how this looks!
