2013 CM Blog Circle: June ~ Shallow DOF

I’m participating in a blog circle with other Clickin Moms for 2013. June’s challenge is called “Shallow Depth-of-Field” which means shooting wide open, with as large of an aperture your lens will allow. I decided to shoot with my Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art Series and shoot at 1.4. I have a number of photos that appear in my [P365] in 52 posts, but decided to make this post more personal.

I wanted to have a series of photos of all of my scars. I have had an unusually large amount of surgeries and procedures for being 43 years old. Because I have Ehler-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, all of my connective tissue continues to deteriorate. It also affects my skin in that I have little elasticity and scar easily. But I wasn’t able to pull off the vision I had… something evocative and beautiful, but I will keep trying.

I’ve had three knee surgeries since 2010 and this first image is a close-up of my right knee. I had a patello-femoral knee replacement with a lateral release in 2011. It was brutal. It took me quite a while to recover and I had recurrent effusions (swelling) in the knee which required aspiration monthly, up to 60cc of fluid being drained each month. So I had another surgery in 2012 to remove the synovial lining in that knee and now it has fully recovered. I am walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week and I’m feeling better than ever.

I debated on whether or not to share this second image because technically it is a fail. It’s a no-no to have only one eye in focus, but this is what happens when you shoot wide open at f/1.4 and are fairly close to your subject. So this is a good lesson on what not to do!
