The Insanely Amazing ~ Creativity with Colors photoshoot!

I attended a workshop at the end of March hosted by Tim Babiak who runs the Austin People and Portrait Photography Meetup Group. This workshop was so much fun. There were five models on three different sets and six photographers. We had a rotation schedule so that each photographer got to shoot each model on each set within a five-hour timeframe. It was intense, exhausting, and intimidating! I was the only female photographer there as well as the only rookie meetup photographer… all the other guys knew each other and had attended workshops together before. I had never shot in studio before nor had I ever worked with professional models before AND most of the other photographers are professionals. Oy! Talk about nervous! But Tim was wonderful, kind, attentive, and knowledgeable.

This workshop was so cool though because it was so freakin’ creative! From the workshop blurb:

Allison Lowery, the Wigs and Makeup Specialist for the UT Performing Arts Center, along with four of her students, transformed five top models into creative and amazing looks based on color! Allison completed each look with costumes from the UTPAC collection. Allison Lowery earned an MFA from the UNC School of Arts in Design & Technology of Wigs and Makeup. Today, Allison serves as Wigs and Makeup Specialist at the University of Austin Performing Arts Center where she serves as an instructor. Be sure to check out Allison’s new book, “Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre & Film” available at Amazon.com.

Finally!!!!!! I have been wanting to post these photos for over a month but had about half a dozen left to edit and could never seem to find the time to finish them. All in all, I took over 450 images and ended up wanting to share about 6 or so of each model (and these are not in the order in which I shot, fyi). I attended this workshop because it gave me a chance to shoot something I would not normally get to do and I thought it would provide some wonderful images for future fantasy digital art pieces. What I learned is that I probably do not want to shoot studio in the future as I venture into business but it was a fun experience. I gained confidence with each click of my shutter. I connected with each model individually  and as the shoot wore on, I got more comfortable posing them and got more creative too.

This is Christen. She was made up by Lindsey and her color was purple.

Next up is Cortney. Allison did her styling and she took on the persona of a 70s superhero chick with the color green. This first image I processed to have a retro, Polaroid feel. The yellow set images I wanted to have a comic book punch to the processing.

Lyddy is next. She is such a sweetheart. She was styled by Bethany and her color was pink.

Ivy was our cavewoman in white and we really, really connected. Lo did her makeup and we really, really connected too. <3 This first image on the gray set was one of the last I took of the day. Can you feel the connection? Can you see a difference between this photo and some of the earlier ones? I processed this one to make her look like porcelain, almost like a sculpture.

This one I loved because of the lines I got along her collar bone. This is a crop… the full-body shot is a few images down.

We got a few jumping shots (and boy, they are hard to nail!)… this one was pretty cool because she is so straight.

Tried a glowy-looking edit on this one (and a few of the others) going for a more editorial look. Not sure if it works or not!

And finally, here is Gaby. She was stunning in red and photographed well on all three sets. Maura was her stylist.

Thanks for taking a look! I learned a lot from this shoot and I had fun too. And that is what photography should be… fun!
